Join artist Maddi Nicholson in the creation of Home; an exhibition by Maddi Nicholson and the communities of Milton Keynes comprising of over 100 miniature fabric houses based on photographs of people’s homes in Beanhill Eaglestone, Great Linford and Netherfield. Together, the houses celebrate the diversity of Milton Keynes people through their homes.

The workshops will involve making a fabric or paper model of a house from Milton Keynes, from pre-printed artist designed patterns. Each participant will use scissors, an iron and if they have the skills, use a sewing machine (although, there will be experienced sewing support on hand!) to adorn the fabric house with your own feelings of what home means to you.

To get you started you will be taken through a series of warm up exercises with Maddi Nicholson, before designing patterns and words to turn into personalised embellishments.

Between 28 September and 2 October 2021, this miniature housing estate goes on tour around Milton Keynes and will be joined by a 5 metre high inflatable sculpture of a typical terraced house from Maddi Nicholson’s home town, Barrow-in-Furness. Based on a terrace that has since been demolished, this artwork makes us consider what is saved and what is lost in the name of redevelopment, and what the impact is on communities.

After the last outside event house makers can take home their houses.

All tools and materials provided
Each participant will have a fabric printed pattern of a Milton Keynes house to work onto. Extra fabric will be provided for your own design and fabric glue, scissors, fabric carbon paper, pins and the use of an iron.
