What will be covered in the class?
On this day course you’ll get to experience the variety and vibrancy of natural colour. Artist Katie Fields will show you how to obtain colour from foraged and organic sources, and how to modify and experiment with wild inks. You’ll be encouraged to paint and draw with these natural colours and be able to take samples home, as well as learn how to make a natural dye. The course includes a foraging walk and Katie will also provide a selection of foraged teas and tisanes during the day.
Workshop Overview
In the morning we’ll go on a foraging walk to collect sources of natural pigments and herbal teas. We’ll prepare the material before lunch and experiment with mark- making. After lunch we will make a series of wild inks and experiment with modifiers, making samples to take home. We’ll finish with a natural dye demonstration.
What will students leave the class with?
Students will leave with a variety of ink and dye samples, plus materials to continue the practice at home. Students will be asked to bring a sketchbook to record their experiments.
What will I need to bring?
Materials and tools are included.
Location
The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable. We will also use outdoor spaces and the Open Garden.
Tutor
Katie Ellen Field’s practice explores the creation and reverence of objects, particularly those used in rituals and ceremonies. Materiality is a frequent starting point; the green and granite of Milton Keynes in particular.
