Ages 16+
Those with a good understanding of paint techniques.
What will be covered in the class?
Each week participants will gain a clear understanding of a new medium that can be incorporated with watercolour. Develop looser compositions, work stylistically and become confident with array experimental approaches and create a series of mix media paintings, seasonal topics, as well looking at array artists who are renown for using these contemporary techniques.
What will students leave the class with?
Each week participants will create practice pieces, short studies and one longer painting incorporating the newly gained approach and previous weeks learning. You will develop shaped compositions and paintings on a larger scale.
Week 1: Drawing with graphite incorporating watercolour paint; theme: Awakening / Bulbs / Shoots
Week 2: Theme Snowdrops / Daffodils/ Crocus. Using additional mediums rubbing alcohol, Inks and watercolour early working from secondary imagery, small sized studies series and one final study
Week 3: Watercolour Studies incorporating stencils. theme: Outside / skies– look at other artists approaches, use wax resist and stencils to create beautiful backdrops to wildlife studies (working from photographs unless weather well).
Week 4: Theme: Spring using dipping pens and fine liners washes creating beautiful textures with line and wash. First some instruction and a series quick exercises; then focus on one long painting study – pencil drawing followed by watercolour washes and glazes - then focus the drawn and painted line.
Week 5: Using previous weeks learnt techniques mediums, participants will create a multitude of delicate layers – using a variety of surfaces from tissue/ corn starch /wool to create a hedgerow inspired by the time of year and locality.
Location
Art Studio: The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Julia Roach is an established visual artist and facilitator whose practice is primarily focused on experimenting with mixed media, graphite and inks. Julia’s work often features collected and found objects. Drawing is intrinsic part of her creative process and my approach is predominantly figurative incorporating colour and exploring a variety of mark making approaches. Julia holds a BA in Painting from Canterbury College of Art and an MFA from Newcastle University.
