Who is this class suitable for?
Ages16+
This course is for those with some experience of hand and machine stitching who are keen to explore using fabrics in a creative way.
What will be covered in the class?
An art textiles workshop exploring collage with cloth and mixed media. During this creative course you will collage together your own, found and recycled fabrics by stitching them to a wadding base. To this base you will explore additional materials and media to add layers and texture such as paint and print techniques. The collage will be finished with machine and/or hand stitch.
What will students leave the class with?
You will leave the class with a textile collage designed to be a framed piece of textile art.
You may finish your artwork on the course, or leave with ideas about how to finish it at home. It will depend on how much you wish to embellish your work.
What will I need to bring?
Please bring with you a selection of recycled and offcut fabrics that you would like to use to personalise your fabric collage e.g. cottons, linen, commercial prints, hand dyed. We recommend limiting your palette to 3-4 colours and consider including some with texture such as lace, muslin.
Surplus fabric offcuts and all other materials and tools will be provided.
Location
Art Studio. The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Anna Woodhead is a textile artist working with fabric, paper and mixed media.
Taking blank cloth as my starting point, I build a palette of colour and texture by dyeing, painting and printing. This cloth becomes my art quilts, through a process of collage, piecing, and stitching. My inspiration comes from the world around me, I observe, take photographs and use these photos to inform design. Landscapes, seascapes, nature and decay form the basis of my work, which is abstract and contemporary.
