What will be covered?
Temari- or hand ball- is a traditional form of Japanese folk art which Ciara first discovered through a love of embroidery, object and a way to ensure that none of her left over textiles were being wasted.

These beautiful objects require focus and flow to make and once you get started they are considered to be extremely relaxing and addictive. In Japan it would take 12 years to train to become a Temari Master! Historically, a Temari Ball would be a gift given by a mother to her child on New Year’s Day, hidden inside there is a paper message of goodwill, and the colours of the embroidery chosen acts as a symbol wishing the recipient a long and happy life. They are beautiful objects for the home and make interesting and precious gifts.
To follow at home you will need:
  • Some scrap fabric (a small handful)
  • A ball of wool
  • A reel of cotton (choose this colour carefully as it will make up the majority of your ball)
  • Embroidery Threads
  • A long needle
  • Pins
  • Paper
  • Scissors
