What will be covered in the class?
Slip casting is the technique used often in the ceramic industry in the creation of multiple identical pieces which then can be decorated and worked upon during the leather hard stage. In this 5 week course, students will learn the process of creating casting slip from regular clay and the process of pouring and creating multiple pieces with the moulds provided; before decorating them in slips and glazes.
Students will be able to choose from a range of plaster moulds available in our ceramics studio, ranging from small vessels such as mugs, bowls and egg cups to more specialist moulds, such as statues and ornaments.
What will students leave the class with?
Students will leave with a handful of slip cast pieces, decorated and glazed during the course.
For courses that take place on a weekly basis, please provide a weekly course plan including key learning points and outcomes.
Week 1: Introduction to slip casting. Working together to create a large amount of slip (cutting up clay and adding with correct amount of sodium silicate to start process) and continuing with ready, a pre-made bucket to show process of slip casting.
