What will be covered in the class?
This course offers you the opportunity to learn about a wide range of decorative techniques to use on clay to create unique imagery, pattern and surfaces. You will make clay slabs, tiles and hand-built items and use a variety of techniques to add decorative pattern and texture through the use of coloured slips, sprigs, underglazes, oxides and glazes.  You will have the opportunity to develop and mix techniques to build depth and colour ways, whilst also considering how to develop repeat patterns and design ideas.

The course will focus on elements taken from three key areas including:
  • Sgraffito,Mishima and slip trailing
  • Texturising clay through the creation of stamps, sprigs and texture sheets
  • Printing on clay using silkscreen, stencils and image transfer

Whilst the course focuses on elements taken from of these three topic areas over each five week period, the course also offers flexibility for individuals to continue the development of techniques learnt on previous  parts of the printing and decorating ceramics course and provides a space to undertake individual project work that is focused on ceramic surface design. At the start of the course, Alondene will outline the key topics covered in the course and discuss any specific project work that the group or individuals wish to undertake.

Alongside this work, you will also be given the opportunity to see how different techniques work together and consider the work of well- known ceramic artists.

What will I need to bring?
  • Sketchbook with ideas, photos, patterns or images / or images (no bigger than A4)
  • Sketchbook to use in the development of your work.
  • Notebook,

Ceramics Studio (Ground floor with raised tables, narrow doorways).

Alondene Phillips originally studied a BA (Hons) in Printed Textile Design. During her BA she had the opportunity to study ceramics and discovered a lifelong passion. She has continued to study ceramics over the past 8 years and in 2017 returned to study an MA in Fine Art with a focus on Ceramics and Surface Design. Her practice focusses on using the  print making and surface design techniques to explore different techniques and push boundaries. As a tutor Alondene aims to open up possibilities for her students and enable them to develop new skills and techniques that will inform and enhance their practice.

Download our Ceramic Studio Handbook for further details on our studio terms of use.

In an effort to make our site more environmentally friendly, we will be restricting kiln firings to a maximum of 6kg (raw clay) of work per student per term.
