Who is this class suitable for?
Ages 16+
Suitable for complete beginners or anyone just needing a creative ‘jumpstart’ welcome.
What will be covered in the class?
In this course, participants will learn the conscious practise of natural colour making. Participants will learn about different fibres and their suitability for dyeing, how to prepare fabrics, explore different dyeing techniques and how to use modifiers to achieve varying results. We will learn about dye sources including food waste, foraged dyes and plants used historically in dyeing. We will look at how to extract pure pigment from dyes and use this to create art materials such as ink, paint and pastels.
Each participant will receive plain tote bags to test dyes and will take home a dye journal filled with samples and records of their natural dyeing journey. Participants are also invited to bring in up to two small garments of their own to dye over the course of the sessions*
What will I need to bring?
Garments for dyeing.
*1 per week, no bigger than a t-shirt or an unlined dress and all of natural fibres.
Location
Art Room, only accessible using stairs.
Tutor
Ciara Callaghan is a fibre artist based in Milton Keynes. She uses needlework and natural dyeing to explore themes around female empowerment, dream imagery and fluxes of reality.
