Established in 1974, Milton Keynes Arts Centre (MKAC) is a multidisciplinary Arts Centre set in the historic grounds of Great Linford Manor Park and a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England. We specialise in co-developing projects with artists and communities in Milton Keynes that respond to the issues affecting people’s lives and help to empower often marginalised communities in the city. Alongside these projects, we offer specialist art production facilities – including in ceramics, woodworking and silversmithing – in which we provide opportunities for people to engage in participatory activities, acquire new skills through working with artists, and support health and well-being.

We are seeking a Marketing and Audience Development Manager to act as Maternity Cover on a 6-month contract (possibly to be extended) to oversee Milton Keynes Arts Centre’s marketing and audience development. The post holder will oversee all external communications, nurture relationships with press partners and help to increase new and returning visitors to MKAC. They will also support the safe management of the Arts Centre, including acting as Duty Manager and covering weekend and evening shifts on a rota basis

Main Duties

Marketing & Community Engagement
  • To lead and implement audience development strategy to help attract and retain new and diverse audiences in line with the organisation’s strategic objectives.
  • To develop and deliver effective integrated marketing campaigns to drive maximum visitor numbers, engagement, loyalty and revenue.
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of the Arts Centre’s Business Plans, Audience Development Plans and Digital Strategies.
  • To monitor marketing budgets and manage associated accounting processes.
  • To oversee the management, analysis and application of audience research; demonstrating an understanding of audience segments to build engagement and drive sales as well as report effectively on campaign success.
  • To lead on, and deliver, digital marketing, social media and CRM with a drive for original and innovative approaches across all internal digital channels, including planning e- newsletters.
  • To continuously monitor and evaluate campaign activity, including paid advertising and CRM results.
  • To develop the organisation’s brand and profile, ensuring that we attract significant visitor numbers, media coverage and closely address our stakeholder priorities.

PR & Communications
  • To oversee all marketing and PR activity, ensuring effective copywriting, tone of voice and design.
  • To regularly review all communications activities, suppliers and resources to ensure best value for money.
  • To represent the organisation at Milton Keynes Arts Centre’s events as well as externally, helping to build relationships with key external stakeholders.
  • To build the Arts Centre’s press network and secure coverage by initiating outreach and securing one-on-one media briefings.
  • To oversee press copyright licensing and ensuring photographic consent for all press and marketing images, captions and information.

Management Responsibilities
  • To provide highly effective team management including overseeing workload, agreeing priorities, and managing performances of the Communications and Audience Development Coordinator, Online Curator plus any freelance and volunteer positions.
  • To participate in training and development activities as required and to assist with the training and development of colleagues.
  • To support the safe management of the Arts Centre, including acting as Duty Manager and covering weekend and evening shifts on a rota basis.

Person Specification

  • Substantial experience and a successful track record of leading, devising and delivery of marketing strategies.
  • Proven experience in delivering innovative and highly effective integrated multiple media marketing campaigns across a broad range of channels.
  • Expertise in digital marketing. Proven knowledge and experience of digital innovation, managing social platforms and content to drive engagement.
  • Expertise in creative campaigns ensuring the most impactful and compelling concepts, stories and imagery.
  • Experience in successfully using audience insight and data to inform strategy and planning including working with customer insight, segmentation and evaluation models.
  • Experience of developing strategic partnerships to support marketing campaign activity.
  • Outstanding editorial and messaging skills and expertise in developing marketing and communications materials.
  • A proven track-record in budget management.
  • Experience of staff and volunteer management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise sensitivity, diplomacy and confidentiality and to build trusted relationships.
  • The confidence to represent MKAC and communicate our values, aims and needs.
  • High level of literacy, numeracy and IT competency with demonstrable experience.
  • An understanding of the day-to-day operational challenges facing community-based projects and small charities and a willingness to ‘pitch in’.
  • A commitment to equality and diversity.
  • A willingness to be DBS checked.

  • Experience of working in/or with small, independent organisations at grassroots level.
  • Familiarity with Mailchimp.
  • Experience of working with Arts Council and Local Authorities.
  • Knowledge of, or connection to, Milton Keynes is an advantage.
  • A UK driving license and car ownership is an advantage.
