What will be covered in the class?
Make your very own a hand sown and hand dyed Japanese bag (shifuku*) with Japanese textile artist/maker Emi Fujisawa. Incorporating Japanese traditional print technique, katazome, using rice glue and indigo dye.
The workshop will be include:
- Making Japanese traditional rice glue.
- Making and cutting your own print design
- Place the rice glue to your design on the vintage fabric
- Hand sewing the shifuku bag
- Hand dye the shifuku bag with an indigo vat.
*In Japan, the shifuku bag is traditionally used to hold a tea bowl and tools for a tea ceremony.
What will students leave the class with?
Each student will leave with one handmade bag, with dimensions of approximately 15 x 15 cm.
What will I need to bring?
All materials and equipment will be provided
Location
Art Studio. The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Emi Fujisawa is a Japanese textile and ceramic artist/designer. Her personal work presents a slow fashions collection as well as making vases and Japanese matcha bowls using her own glazes made with natural materials.
