Who is this class suitable for?
This course is suitable for all levels of skills from beginners to more experienced silversmiths and is designed to accommodate both those wishing to explore this craft for the first time and those with experience who wish to extend their skills a little further.

What will be covered in the class?
This 10-week course is a project-based course in which students will be guided by tutor Clare Layton towards the completion of self-initiated projects, supporting the development of personal styles and individual creative techniques.

You will learn how to:
  • Prepare materials and finish polish them.
  • Cut using tinsnips, piercing saw and how to file metal.
  • Silver soldering techniques and flux.
  • Manipulate wire and form sheet. Learners can work in copper, gilding metal or sterling silver.

What to bring? Students will need to purchase some of their own materials. This will cost on average £80 per term depending on size and metals. All materials available to buy from tutor. Tools provided. It is advised that each student brings with them on their first lesson a sketchbook and pencil and long with an old apron to protect clothing. Also it is advisory for all students with long hair to tie it up for every lesson and to wear old appropriate clothing and cover shoes (no leggings, Shorts, Skirts, Dresses, flip flops, open toed shoes, high heels or dolly shoes ) this is for health and safety reasons as we will be working with hot materials and open flames.

Clare Layton has been working with Milton Keynes Arts Centre for a number of years to deliver her hugely popular and sell-out silversmith workshops. Clare has extensive experience in silversmith techniques and creative tutoring.
