Who is this class suitable for? 
This course is  suitable for  all levels of skills from beginners to more experienced  silversmiths and is  designed  to accommodate both those wishing to explore this craft for the first time and those with experience who wish to extend their skills a little further. 

What will be covered in the class?
You will learn how to:
  • Prepare materials, and finish polish them.
  • Cut – using tinsnips, piercing saw and how to file metal.
  • Silver soldering techniques and flux.
  • Manipulate wire and form sheet.
  • Learners can work in copper, gilding metal or sterling silver.

Complete beginners are encouraged to follow these ideas:
  • S shaped ring / Forming / planishing / soldering polishing
  • Pendant saw piercing polishing
  • Earrings doming and forming polishing
  • Bangle twisting and soldering
  • or Spinner ring

How you will learn?
Demonstrations of practical techniques
Making samples and projects
Group discussions and shared ideas

How to prepare?
Gather visuals of ideas for things you might like to make.

Will you gain a qualification? 
You may not gain a formal qualification but you can receive a Certificate of Attendance and Achievement from your tutor.

What to bring
Please bring a note book and pen.

If you have your own tools, these should be marked with your name.
Students will  need to purchase  some of  their own materials. This will cost on average £80 per term depending on size and metals. All materials available to buy from tutor. Tools provided. It is advised that each student brings with them on their first lesson a sketchbook and pencil and long with an old apron to protect clothing. Also it is advisory for all students with long hair to tie it up for every lesson and to wear old appropriate clothing and cover shoes (no leggings, Shorts, Skirts, Dresses, flip flops, open toed shoes, high heals or dolly shoes ) this is for health and safety reasons as we will be working with hot materials and open flames.

Tutor
Clare Laytonhas been working with Milton Keynes Arts Centre for a number of years to deliver her hugely popular and sell-out silversmith workshops. Clare has extensive experience in silversmith techniques and creative tutoring.

Booking Terms and Conditions
Completing your booking with Milton Keynes Arts Centre signifies your agreement to the below terms of Refunds and Cancellation. All profits support our annual programme of exhibitions, events and charitable outreach projects.

Bookings are non-refundable and only transferable at the discretion of Milton Keynes Arts Centre. Any workshops that you are unable to attend cannot be refunded and cannot be reallocated.

Courses may be rescheduled/cancelled by Milton Keynes Arts Centre if the minimum number of required students is not met. Notification of a possible reschedule/cancellation will be sent to students three-working days before the first workshop of the term, in this instance only will refunds be issued in full if a course is rescheduled/cancelled.
Photographs and/or video will be taken during this course
As a registered charity, it can sometimes be necessary to share photos and videos of our community outreach in printed matter, social media, press releases and funding applications.  By taking part in this event you grant Milton Keynes Arts Centre full rights to use the images resulting from the photography/video filming to help achieve our charitable aims.
