For those who have a good understanding of watercolour painting and drawing and wish to develop their skills and style.
What will be covered in the class?
This course is structured to ensure participants enhance their established painting skills. All will create individual painting’s and explore ideas with guidance of an experienced watercolour tutor. You will have opportunity to incorporate mediums such sea salt/rubbing alcohol/ corn-starch. You will be introduced to array contemporary watercolour artists that are known for using these approaches as well creating a series of beautiful watercolour paintings.
Week 1: Textures and “wet on wet” backdrops painting organic forms / use fan brushes / sponging and line to create a bold beautiful watercolour painting
Week 2: Small scale watercolours, details from old buildings in the locality focusing on edges and surfaces depicting rusty metal.
Week 3: Depicting old weather rusty and weathered window / doors using the locality partly as inspiration (and revisit some techniques of previous weeks) fine liners/ inks and sea salt .
Week 4: After focusing on details in previous week the focus the bigger picture epic skies and textured foreground – introduction to using glycerine. one to one guidance and group instruction (some may wish to use rulers).
Week 5: Individuals ideas developed, explore depth and distance – planned and discussed over the previous sessions. Tutor led painting working upright or at angle.
What will students leave the class with?
Preliminary drawings using a variety of drawing mediums, lots of painting exercises and test pieces, as well focused watercolour painting/s on occasion pertinent to mediums or approach used.

Location
Art Studio: The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Julia Roach is an established visual artist and facilitator whose practice is primarily focused on experimenting with mixed media, graphite and inks. Julia’s work often features collected and found objects. Drawing is intrinsic part of her creative process and my approach is predominantly figurative incorporating colour and exploring a variety of mark making approaches. Julia holds a BA in Painting from Canterbury College of Art and an MFA from Newcastle University.
