Inspired by the everyday technique of carrying things on the head; a common practice in many parts of the world since ancient times, sometimes in religious ceremonies or as a skilled feat in dances with impressive balance and dexterity, Headland aims to interpret and embody everyday places and spaces through ‘psycho-geographic living sculptures’.
Throughout April and May, artist collective RARA invited Milton Keynes residents; Mark Baron, Debbie Buscaglia, Susie Ford, Sonia Hooton and Wenda Hooton to participate in a series of workshops to recollect and share their special memories of Milton Keynes, sculpting objects that embody the emotional values of the memory. As a way of reconnecting the human body with the objects of memory and place, our communities performed ‘psycho-geographic living sculptures’ in the grounds of the Arts Centre and surrounding parklands, balancing the objects atop their heads using traditional head rings.
