Ages 16+
For those with a little or no knowledge of painting techniques.
What will be covered in the class?
This five-week course will give you the opportunity to get too grips with the very versatile and mobile medium of oil paint, as well as learning to draw using solid graphite, charcoal, and pastels. Each week you will create preparatory drawings before commencing painting. Sometimes you will create test pieces and small studies. The topic will often be seasonal as well as exploring artist techniques and approaches. You will have good understanding of oil techniques, for example Impasto, Scumbling, Alla Prima · Glazing, Underpainting by the end of the 5 weeks
What will students leave the class with?
Each week you will create at least one drawing in a different drawing medium or a mixture of drawing mediums you will also create at least one oil painting. The scale of your paintings will get larger as the weeks progress and some weeks you will create small postcard size pre-studies in oil.
Week 1 Organic forms: Drawing with graphite pencils and creating one colour tonal paint studies using big and bold, daubing, glazes and paint application
Week 2: Potted plants ellipses and objects sitting their own spaces (composition and viewpoints). Drawing with willow charcoal (2 drawings) and one painting study using black and white paint
Week 3: Drawing with pastels using soft pastels then creating a painting using purely red, yellow and blue. Big and bold building depth of colour/colour mixing- impasto
Week 4 Still-life: Drawing with chalk and charcoal, full colour depicting cloth; look at the work of the Impressionists (mark-making) specially Paul Cezanne
Week 5: Drawing in favoured medium on a larger scale leading onto a painting looking at the great outside, skies and trees textures and sgraffito.
Please note oil paint marks clothing, aprons or coveralls are provided and we recommend you wear old clothing, along with hair-ties and closed-toe shoes
Location
Art Studio: The art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Julia Roach is an established visual artist and facilitator whose practice is primarily focused on experimenting with mixed media, graphite and inks. Julia’s work often features collected and found objects. Drawing is intrinsic part of her creative process and my approach is predominantly figurative incorporating colour and exploring a variety of mark making approaches. Julia holds a BA in Painting from Canterbury College of Art and an MFA from Newcastle University.
