Who is this class suitable for?
Through hand building techniques in coiling and slab work, this course offers experienced students more sophisticated techniques working with different types of clay.
What will be covered in the class?
Use large scale hand building techniques to create larger pieces. Lizzie will support creative learners to experiment with form, scale and texture. There will be opportunities to work in our Open Garden to gather ideas and inspiration. Glazing will focus on making work safe to display outside to ensure large pieces can be displayed in gardens. Please be aware work may take longer to fire than usual due to the scale of the work so collection iwill be coordinated with our technician.
What’s included?
Each student will have 2 bags of grogged clay (clay mixed with ground up fired ceramics which is stronger and easier to build large pieces with). Recycled clay will be available to build models or maquettes from. Glaze materials and oxides are also available. A sketchbook and pencil are essential for design work and technical notes. Aprons or coveralls should be worn at all times, along with hair tied and close-toed shoes.
Tutor
Lizzie Westray is a Milton Keynes based ceramicist specialising in sculptural ceramics and ‘low-tech’ firings such as Raku and wood-fired kilns.
“I find ceramics a great pleasure and am always fascinated by the things that people make. In classroom situations I encourage everyone to try everything at least once ‘til they find that thing that really ‘floats their boat’!”
