Who is this class suitable for?
The classes are suitable for all abilities from beginners to the more experienced. The beginners will be guided through the main making techniques, the more advanced students will be challenged to refine and develop their personal styles.
What will be covered in the class?
This 10-week course will introduce students to ceramic hand-building techniques. Led by tutor Kirsteen Holuj, students will explore: pinching, coiling, slab building, decoration techniques such as mark-making, and slip decoration and glazing techniques. Students will also have the opportunity to have a go on our four potter’s wheels and learn to master the art of throwing. This course offers a wide exposure to ceramic techniques and aims to teach and refine the essential skills needed by ceramicists.
What to Bring?
Students willneed to purchase some of their own course specific materials. Stoneware or grog clay can be bought for £10 when booking your place or by calling Milton Keynes Arts Centre. Students should bring a small sketchbook and pencil.
Kirsteen Holuj has 20 years of pottery experience and has been teaching part time for 15 of those years. The focus of her practice currently is exploring how textures made on the surface of pots formed on the wheel can be enhanced by different firing techniques such as soda firing and raku.
‘Clay is the most amazing material and with patience, practice and perseverance can produce an endless variety and always unique results.’
