Milton Keynes Arts Centre is seeking a hard-working, reliable, self-motivated person to act as caretaker. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and security of the Arts Centre’s site at Great Linford.

Main Duties

  • Upkeep and general care of the Arts Centre’s buildings, including minor repairs to property, fixtures, fittings and equipment.
  • Maintain grounds, including mowing and occasional plant clearance to ensure paths and driveways are free of hazards and obstructions.
  • Ensure security of the site, including the locking of all windows, doors and gates and the setting of alarms.
  • Undertake regular fire and health & safety checks of the site and follow reporting procedures to ensure that any issues are dealt with appropriately and speedily.
  • Act as site supervisor for evening activities and events, including occasional weekends.
  • Draw the attention of the appropriate authorities, via the Finance & Operations Manager, to any repairs or maintenance work, which is beyond the competence and responsibility of the Caretaker.
  • Ensure that external rubbish is stored appropriately, manage waste collections as required, collect litter and remove debris from public areas.
  • Direct workmen and contractors to the sites of repair and maintenance work and inspect the work of contractors to ensure it is completed to a satisfactory standard.
  • General porterage duties including moving furniture and other objects across the site.
  • Maintain logs of weekly fire and health and safety checks.
  • Make safe any hazards; ensuring that hazard areas are cordoned off and any hazardous materials are appropriately stored.
  • Be responsible for monitoring and ordering cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Read gas, electric and water meters, monitor and help to reduce consumption by switching appliances off when not in use.
  • Ensure that all portable electrical appliances are PAT tested annually and conduct PAT testing as required.
  • Be aware of the location of all stopcocks, gas and electricity meters.
  • To undertake other duties as may be reasonably required.

Person Specification

  • Skills and/or experience in one or more of the following: plumbing, general and grounds maintenance, electrical/building maintenance, joinery
  • Literate and numerate
  • Considerable DIY experience
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations relevant to the post
  • Awareness of COSHH regulations
  • An understanding of and a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults
  • An understanding of and a commitment to Equal Opportunities
  • Ability to undertake some lifting and working at height
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends on occasions
  • Ability to respond calmly to emergencies
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with persons at all levels and deal with contractors
  • Ability to prioritise and organise own tasks with minimum supervision and to work to agreed targets
  • Desire and willingness to learn new skills, and respond positively to advice and guidance
  • A readiness and flexibility to take on the challenges of the role and a willingness to ‘pitch in’

  • A clear understanding and commitment to the aims and success of MKAC

  • Recognised qualifications in plumbing, general and grounds maintenance, electrical/building maintenance or joinery; time served in building trade or apprenticeship
  • Experience of undertaking responsibility for the care and maintenance of premises
  • PAT testing trained
  • Fire warden trained
  • DBS checked
  • Own vehicle and full driving license
