What will be covered in the class?
This course marries together two heritage crafts; natural dyeing and quilt making.
Both crafts enable us to slow down, connect with nature and the making process. The resulting quilt will be a beautiful, handmade piece that can be passed down through generations as quilts have been for hundreds of years.
This ten-week course begins with an exploration into natureal dye sources available during the Winter. We will then explore abstract patching techniques inspired by flat press fabric techniques and Japanese boro as we learn hand quilting, binding and finishing techniques.
What will students leave the class with?
Each student will leave with a completely unique piece of functional textile art, coloured by nature and made with patience, time and skill as well as the knowledge to continue their design and quilting journey.’
Materials are included. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines in on weeks 5 & 6 as we have limited numbers (please get in touch if this is not possible so we can organize ones to be available on site) and are also welcome to bring any textiles of sentimental value they may want to include in their quilt.
Location
Art Studio, the art studio is situated at the top of a flight of stairs. Tools are all light and accessible. Work benches are not currently height adjustable.
Tutor
Ciara Callaghan is a natural colour and textile artist based. Her work is an exploration into being present and finding calm in the making process as well as functional textiles as fine art objects and the history of a piece of textile art from dyeing and making through to the relationship of owning. Ciara creates a learning environment where you can slow down and leave busy life behind you as you learn new skills and enter the flow state of making.
